**** This position for use in Health Information Departments ONLY*****

This position assembles, organizes, collects, abstracts, releases, and maintains medical records in complex multimedia systems to support patient care, quality, and safety. The incumbent ensures compliance with State, Federal, and other regulatory agencies for medical record requirements. Conducts all morgue management duties and prepares death certificates. Coordinates and tracks the release of protected health information to authorized requestors. Provides and coordinates customer service duties.

Responsibilities:

- Provides first point contact and service to internal/external customers. Identify and direct customers to appropriate resource.
- Daily reconciliation and collection of hospital discharges.
- Scans medical records into the HER, trouble shooting of scanning software. Assists in training for institution wide scanning.
- Validates request and releases protected health information per State, Federal, and other regulatory agencies.
- Maintains integrity of MPI and EMR facilitating accuracy and timely availability of information.
- Issues medical record numbers as needed.
- Oversees the placement of bodies in the morgue; review and verify necessary documentation. Notifies and releases bodies/remains to mortuaries or appropriate parties.
- Collects necessary information for completion of death certificate, and initiates electronic death certificate via State systems and guidelines.
- Assists in training, mentors and gives feedback to team members and HIM externs.
- Performs routine accounting and deposit for release of information revenue. Follow up with delinquent accounts.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

- Demonstrated knowledge of basic health information processes, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and HIPAA regulations.
- Working knowledge of word processing, spread sheet, MS products, and other healthcare related computer systems.
- Strong interpersonal communication, organization, problem solving, and prioritizing skills.
- Ability to determine if patient records meet regulatory agency standards and take action required to ensure that they do so when necessary.
- Ability to interpret and differentiate types of requests for release of protected health information, validate the authenticity of the requests and determine the minimum necessary information to be released per federal and state regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications:

Required

- Three years of experience in a healthcare environment or equivalency.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic health information processes, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and HIPAA regulations.
