Under the direction of a Sr. Certified Tumor Registrar, this position is responsible for coding, staging and abstracting all cases of cancer and certain benign tumors initially seen, diagnosed and/or treated at the University of Utah Hospital & Clinics (UUHC).

This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Responsibilities:

- All essential functions must be done under the supervision of a Sr. Certified Tumor Registrar.
- Abstracts and reviews cases of malignancies and certain benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated at University of Utah Hospital & Clinics.
- Codes, stages, and enters into the computer each case added to the tumor registry utilizing ICD-O, ICD-9/10, AJCC TNM (Tumor, Nodes, Metastasis) & Collaborative Staging/Coding, FORDS (Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards), and SEER (Surveillance of Epidemiology and End Results) guidelines.
- Complies with state and federal mandates that require the UUHC to report all diagnosed and/or treated malignancies and certain benign tumors.
- Participates in the quality management of the registry data and activities.
- Contacts patients, providers, & state registries per the database to gather follow-up information and verify or correct patient information.
- Compiles data and generates reports for special studies.
- Assists in retrieving and compiling data for preparation of annual reporting.
- Assists in completing the American College of Surgeons Patient Care Evaluations.
- Assists in coordinating the Tumor Board and attending Cancer Committee meetings with a Certified Tumor Registrar.
- Assist with the management of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory rules and regulations.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

- Knowledge of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Basic Coding.
- Demonstrated knowledge of HIPPA regulations.
- Knowledge in comprehending clinical documentation, ICD-0, ICD-9/10 or CPT coding for physician & facility and associated grouping assignment.
- Ability to communicate on a professional level with physicians, practitioners and support staff. Includes good writing and composition skills.
- Ability to organize teams and lead when assigned.
- Ability to assist in conflict management of teams.

Qualifications:

Required

- Associates degree or equivalency.
- College level course completion in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Human Physiology.
- Must complete CTR Exam within three years of hire date.
- CTR Eligibility Requirements: An Associate’s degree, 160-hour practicum in a CTR-staffed cancer registry, and completion of either an NCRA-Accredited formal education degree program or completion of an NCRA –Accredited Certificate program, or An Associate’s degree, two semesters of `Human Anatomy & Physiology’, and 1950 hours (equivalent to one year full-time) experience in the Cancer Registry field.

Qualifications (Preferred):

Preferred

- Medical Coding Courses, knowledge of ICD-0, ICD-9/10 and/or CPT.
- Concurrent enrollment in AHIMA or NCRA related area Associate Degree or certificate program.
- Two years of coding experience and/or three years experience working in a Health Information Cancer Registry or equivalent health related field.
