This position maintains current accurate data within the trauma registry by collecting, entering, retrieving and reporting data related to all trauma patients treated at the University of Utah Hospital, to establish supportive documentation qualifying the University Hospital as a Level One Trauma Center.

Responsibilities:

- Collects trauma patient information through chart requisition and medical records.
- Accurately enters demographic and visit information into the trauma registry for every trauma patient treated.
- Identifies, prepares, and distributes a list of the trauma patient census to members of the trauma team.
- Prepares bi-monthly summaries of all trauma-related deaths for Multidisciplinary Trauma Review committee meetings.
- Prepares and presents statistical reports as requested at quarterly Trauma Performance Improvement and Patients Safety (PIPS) meeting.
- Codes injury severity for all traumatic injuries using ICD-10 and AIS coding.
- Retrieves and compiles data for performance improvement and IRB approved research studies.
- Prepares and submits quarterly trauma data to the State
Department: of Health and the American College of Surgeons Total Quality Improvement Program (TQIP).
- Prepares and submits annual trauma registry data to the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB).
- Participates in quarterly state trauma user’s group (TUG) meetings and periodic training.
- Provides statistical data as requested by members of the trauma team.
- Participates in all registry required activities to maintain verification as a level 1 trauma center.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

- Demonstrated ICD-10 and AIS coding skills
- Demonstrated computer skills as well as effective communication skills.
- Ability to assimilate data from various sources.
- Ability to quickly learn new procedures and process.
- Able to prioritize and multi task in a fast paced environment.
- Have knowledge of HIPPA regulations to insure patient information is guarded and respected.

Qualifications:

Required

- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
- One year of clerical of coding experience.
- Advanced medical terminology knowledge.
- Certified as an Abbreviated Injury Scaling Specialist (CAISS) within one year of hire.

Qualifications (Preferred):

Preferred

- Previous expereince as a trauma registrar and/or inpatient coding experience.
